What is Energy Medicine?
I often get asked this when I explain that I’m a Reiki and energy medicine practitioner. Reiki has become better understood in the last few decades, but energy medicine is still new to many folx.
The Difference Between Energy Medicine and Reiki
While Reiki involves sending universal energy through the chakras to an individual or place, energy medicine is the direct manipulation of different parts of the energetic body with the hands. Some practitioners use crystals or magnets.
Unlike Reiki (which requires training and attunement) anyone can practice energy medicine with their hands, and I teach techniques to my healing clients and students in my wellness classes.
To best understand energy medicine, it’s important to understand the basics of our energic body. Like our physical body, our energetic body has various components responsible for keeping us healthy. And, like our physical bodies, our energetic bodies are subject to injury and illness. An injury or illness that affects one eventually affects the other, so it is important to pay attention to the health of both our physical and energetic beings.
The Energetic Body
Broadly, there are 3 components to the energetic body. In actuality, there are more, but for our purposes, we’ll stick to the most basic and well-known:
- Chakras – energy centers that occur in different sizes and intensities all over the body. When chakras are discussed in healing it is most often the 7 main chakras that run up the center of the body from the pelvic floor to the crown of the head.
- Meridians – energy pathways that travel the length of the body (in most cases) ensuring the healthy flow of energy into, through, and out of the body.
- Aura or auric field – a layered egg-shaped sphere of energy emanating from the body. It protects us and acts like a radar, informing us of the energies we encounter and filtering out and drawing in energies as needed.
Energy Medicine Practices
Energy medicine offerings range from the deep, shamanic healing practiced and taught by Alberto Villoldo, to basic techniques practiced by healers in many fields. These techniques might include chakra clearing, acupressure, tapping, and aura sweeping.
My training in energy medicine is through the Eden Energy Medicine program, and in addition to the techniques mentioned above, I do meridian tracing and flushing, mending auric holes or tears, and auric strengthening.
Benefits of Energy Medicine
I work with energy medicine as part of my practice because of the healing benefits I experienced when I began working with it daily. I think it is an excellent complement to Reiki, and it can be practiced by anyone. Some of the benefits you might experience include:
- Increased energy and stamina
- Improved immune response
- Faster healing
- Pain relief
- Improved mood/mental stability
- Better sleep
How to Bring Energy Medicine Into Your Life
An easy way is to practice the Daily Energy Medicine Routine. Developed by Donna Eden, I added some modifications and teach this to students in my Wholistic Wellness Class. It is a practice that I’ve made part of my personal Wholistic Wellness Plan, and can’t recommend it enough.
